40 years ago, Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital town of Brunei Darussalam, was known as Bandar Brunei. On 4th October 1967, the late 28th Sultan of Brunei, Almarhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien voluntarily abdicated in favour of his eldest son, Yang Teramat Mulia Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota Hassanal Bolkiah.
After the abdication, Al-Marhum was then known as Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Maulana Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien. Bandar Seri Begawan was named after the him on 4th October 1970, in recognition of his dedication as the Architect of Modern Brunei.
The area of Bandar Seri Begawan has now widened from 1,287 hectares to 10,036.24 hectares since 1st August 2007 onwards.
