Today, 29th September, is the Civil Service Day (Hari Perkhidmatan Awam) in Brunei Darussalam. It was first celebrated in 1994 and is observed on every 29th September in commemoration of the Constitution Day.

With the theme of the Civil Service Day being "Together towards achieving the Brunei 2035 Vision," the Civil Service is being reminded to always be proactive in fulfilling the needs and wishes of the public as they are the actual stakeholders to the Civil Service.
Civil Service Day was first introduced in 1994 and is observed on every 29th of September to commemorate the glorious history of the Constitution Day that was regarded as the turning point in the country's history. Civil Service Day is celebrated in showing recognition and appreciation to the civil service community as well as the role played by the Civil Service itself as a facilitator, policy implementer, and security guardian towards prosperity, well-being and peace.
The Civil Service Day also intends to remind the civil service community of their pledge of loyalty in implementing all the government policies, directives, and regulations towards excellence.
His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in the titah during the Audience and Presentation of State Decorations and Honorary Medals Ceremony in conjunction with His Majesty's 64th birthday, underscored the need for further improvement in the civil service in terms of productivity and work ethics. His Majesty wished that the Civil Service would continuously evaluate its strength and weaknesses based on the Key Performance Indicators. In such a way, the country could measure how best the civil service could execute its reponsibility towards fulfilling the hopes of the nation and the public in line with the key reqirements.
According to the Civil Service Statistics, up to the 31st of August 2010, 45 thousand 769 people have been working in the civil service. Out of the number, 30 thousand 227 were permanent staff, 9 thousand 641 were serving on a month-to-month basis, 1 thousand 274 on contract, while 5 thousand 627 served on open vote.
Every civil service staff member is required to abide by all regulations and directives enforced from time to time. These regulations and directives are intended at producing a civil service community that is clean, honest, efficient and trustworthy in line with the moral principles and work ethics of the civil service. The regulations and directives include the regulations for government officers pertaining to moral conduct and courtesy, Section 83 of the Civil Service Commission Act, the Prime Minister's Office Circular and the Civil Service Department's Notice.
The Ministries and Government Departments play a very challenging role in giving high-quality services. At the same time, the internal and external challenges in this era of gobalisation require every ministry and department to act with their maximum force of energy and efficiency to achieve their vision of delivering excellent, high-quality, charismatic and competitive services.
